When Will Facebook Reach 1 Billion Users?

Following Facebook’s announcement yesterday that it had topped 900 million monthly average users, the obvious next milestone is 1 billion, and according to Ireland-based bookmaker Paddy Power, August is the early favorite for when that mark will be reached.

Paddy Power started taking bets earlier this month on which company Facebook would acquire next, following its $1 billion deal to scoop up photo-sharing service Instagram. Location-based mobile application Foursquare was the early favorite in that race.

When Paddy Power first starting taking bets on user No. 1 billion for Facebook, the first half of 2013 was the favorite, but the social network’s recent growth prompted the bookmaker to revise its odds, which are currently:

  • April: 25 to 1
  • May: 12 to 1
  • June: 6 to 1
  • July: 11 to 4
  • August: 5 to 2
  • September: 3 to 1
  • October: 5 to 1
  • November: 12 to 1
  • December: 12 to 1
  • 2013 or later: 9 to 1

Paddy Power Spokesperson Féilim Mac An Iomaire said:

It’s not unusual for Facebook to exceed expectations, but it blew ours out of the water. August now looks to be the most likely month for Facebook to reach the 1 billion user mark, but we have been wrong before.
