1Q EARNINGS: Will Facebook Use Nearby Friends Data To Help Serve Relevant Ads?

NearbyFriends650Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg hinted that data from the social network’s recently introduced Nearby Friends feature may be used to help it serve more relevant ads to users.

Robert Baird Analyst Colin Sebastian asked during the question-and-answer session of Wednesday’s first-quarter earnings call:

Regarding Nearby Friends, I’m just wondering how you plan to tie that feature and data set into more of a commercialized local offering for businesses, whether that’s geo-targeting or other related services.

And Sandberg replied:

Nearby Friends is a great new feature, an optional feature we just rolled out last week, I don’t know if, people have had a chance to try it yet. It’s rolling out slowly, but it’s a great product experience, and one that we’re excited to be able to offer.

We use the information like this to enhance all the services we provide and make things more relevant, including relevant ads.
