Every operations staffer at one of Facebook’s data centers can manage at least 20,000 servers, with some handling as many as 26,000, Facebook Director of Data Center Operations Delfina Eberly said during her keynote speech Tuesday at the 7×24 Exchange 2013 Fall Conference, as reported by Data Center Knowledge.
According to Data Center Knowledge, the server-to-administrator ratio rarely exceeds 10,000-to-one.
Eberly also shared some Facebook statistics, including:
- 1.19 billion monthly active users, and 728 million daily active users.
- 4.75 billion content items shared per day.
- 4.5 billion likes per day.
- More than 240 billion photos stored.
- 7 petabytes of photo storage added each month.
And Eberly discussed Facebook’s use of automation software such as Cyborg, Data Center Knowledge reported, saying:
Our goal is not to deploy a technician to the data center floor unless they actually have to physically handle a server.
We want to hang onto our talent. The way you do that is to give them the opportunity to work on high-value tasks. We want them to stay and improve. This matters to us.
