Facebook: 70 Percent Of U.S. Users Have At Least One Gay, Lesbian, Or Bisexual Friend

A Facebook spokesman told The Wall Street Journal’s Washington Wire blog that approximately 70 percent of the social network’s users in the U.S. have at least one friend who has indicated on Facebook that they are gay, lesbian, or bisexual.

Washington Wire pointed out that Facebook had 195 million users in the U.S. and Canada combined as of March 31, noting that not all connections on the social network are with family members or close friends, and that not all Facebook users choose to reveal their sexual preferences.

The blog also reported that the results from Facebook mirror those of a recent poll by Pew Research Center, which found that 87 percent of U.S. respondents personally knew someone who was gay or lesbian, up from 61 percent in 1993, and that 49 percent have close friends or family members who are gay.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Supreme Court is slated to rule on California’s Proposition 8 and a 1996 federal ban on benefits for same-sex couples.
