Dr. Mark Plunkett has been a pediatric heart surgeon for 17 years. While he often helps children with genetic heart problems, he finds that more and more he’s seeing kids developing the early stages of heart problems that are usually found in adults. Plunkett says that there is a dangerous rise in obesity-related heart problems for kids – both in his practice and on a national level.
The percentage of children with high cholesterol levels is soaring according to a study of more than 12,000 children aged 9-11 presented at the American College of Cardiology’s annual conference. In this study, 30% of the children had borderline or abnormal cholesterol levels. This study is right in line with the statistic that childhood obesity has more than doubled in the past 30 years according to Catching Health with Diane Atwood. Read more

While national unemployment numbers maintain a sluggish decrease, Neumont University is preparing students to enter an industry where job openings are plentiful and growing.
“There’s a real need for computer scientists in the country right now,” said Neumont University’s Executive Vice President of Academic Operations Aaron Reed. “We see it first-hand: Employers have to compete for our graduates, because they’re often getting multiple job offers even before they’ve graduated.”
The Association for Computing Machinery estimates the computing industry will gain 150,000 jobs over the next six years, citing federal forecasts. In contrast, no more than 40,000 Americans received degrees in computer science in 2010, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
That number is down from a 2004 peak in computer science degree issuance, when the National Center for Education Statistics said 33 percent more students earned CS degrees. The U.S. Department of Education found that interest in programming classes at the high school level also dropped. Read more
Facebook is no stranger to sticker shock… or backlash for that matter.
News that it was buying little known messaging startup – WhatsApp – for $19 billion was quickly panned as a desperate and expensive move. “This is crazy money,” noted Rob Enderle, principle analyst at Enderle Group, as quoted by CNBC. “I think they massively overpaid for this. They’ve done it because they are desperate.”
“Google mocks Facebook’s $19 billion WhatsApp purchase,” read the latest Tech Times headline.
“Facebook paid too much for WhatsApp,” noted MarketWatch.
Home spas can be a great investment, offering a relaxing respite from the stresses of daily life. But to maximize those benefits, it’s critical to find the right one for your particular needs.
“The key to finding the perfect fit is to consider your specific needs for the hot tub and to make the decision accordingly,” says Thermospas’ Senior Marketing Manager Jamie Murrett.
A hot tub can provide a soothing experience without the maintenance headaches that come with a larger swimming pool. You also won’t need a permit to install one like you would for a pool. However, a little bit of pre-planning goes a long way. Read more
Gemstone providers that directly source their goods from mines have a unique advantage—and responsibility—as compared to those who do not, said Gerald Tempton, president of Liquidation Channel. These companies have a powerful opportunity to add value to their customers, as well as ensure that ethical mining practices are put into place. The result: companies that directly source from mines are better positioned to improve the quality of products, and the quality of life, for their customers and local mining economies.
“All tanzanite is sourced from one place, and they only sell to people who are site holders at the ‘TANZANITEONE’ Mine,” Tempton said. “We get first right of refusal on all tanzanite, ensuring that we only get the best tanzanite in the world.” By cutting out third parties, Liquidation Channel oversees its own sourcing and passes these benefits on to their customers. According to QNET, the direct selling industry is sometimes portrayed in a way that is a little misleading or erroneous. At times, the media conflates direct selling with pyramid scheming, creating the illusion that a direct selling company is some kind of a scam. In reality, of course, just the opposite is true—but making this mistake does damage not only to legitimate direct selling companies, but also to consumers.
Defining the Terms
For those who are not familiar with the concept of direct selling, it is really fairly simple. QNET defines it as selling products to consumers in a face-to-face setting, as opposed to in a traditional retail setting (or online). It is true enough that the selling takes place via a network of distributors, yet, crucially, direct selling is markedly different from pyramid scheming. Read more
