School Isn’t Over Yet, But Facebook Offers Advice To Brands For Back-To-School Season

BackToSchoolStats650School isn’t even over yet, but Facebook is already urging marketers to prepare for the upcoming back-to-school season, offering some relevant statistics in a post on the Facebook for Business page.

According to the social network, 78 percent of Facebook users in the U.S. who talk about back to school are women, and 42.7 percent are moms, while 25 percent of conversations on the subject take place between college-age adults, 18 through 24.

In Canada, meanwhile, women talk about back to school three times more often than men do, and 38 percent of related conversations come from mothers, while those aged 18 through 24 are responsible for 27 percent of back-to-school-related chatter.

Facebook said in its Facebook for Business post:

School-related chatter on Facebook starts to pick up in late July, about one month before the traditional back-to-school period, with a strong spike in conversations during the last two weeks of August. The main topics mentioned last year were stores, clothing, and school supplies, and some of the top retailers mentioned were Staples, Walmart, Kmart, and Target. Popular fashion-related items were shirts, backpacks, sweaters, and jeans. Top tech devices were laptops and iPads.

And the social network offered the following takeaways for marketers looking to take advantage of back-to-school season:

  • Help the millions of North American parents — especially moms — on Facebook prepare their families for back-to-school with offers and discounts on school supplies, clothing, and technology, including laptops, phones, and tablets.
  • In addition, connect with the millions of North American adults age 18 through 24 on Facebook who are in college by offering them discounts on necessities for dorm life, including bedding, furniture, appliances, technology, and healthy food they can eat on-the-go between classes.
