Which Hashtags Did Instagram Ban From Search Results?

Users of Facebook-owned photo-sharing network Instagram have been able to add hashtags to their photos and (recently) videos for quite some time, but some of those hashtags may not be searchable.

The Data Pack used Instagram’s application-programming interface to put together an unofficial list of hashtags that are blocked from searches on Instagram.

The list contains profanity and extensions of foul language, as well as pornographic terms and potentially harmful hashtags such as #proanorexia and #thinspiration, but The Data Pack pointed out that seemingly harmless hashtags also made the list, including #photography, #iphone, and #instagram.

The inclusion of those hashtags was partially explained by Instagram Co-Founder Mike Krieger in a post on the Instagram API Developer Google Group, in which he wrote, as reported by The Data Pack:

We’ve stopped serving feeds (both in app and API) for some tags that were too generic and didn’t provide enough end-user value.

Another oddity pointed out by The Data Pack: #iphone and #iphone4s are on the banned list, but #iphone5 is not.

The complete list is available here.
