Coca-Cola Tops 50M Facebook Fans, Eyes Putting Them To Work

If you’d like to buy every one of Coca-Cola’s Facebook fans an ice-cold Coke, you’d better order up a little more than 50 million of them, as the iconic beverage became the first retail brand to top 50 million likes.

Coca-Cola also announced an initiative to tap those 50 million-plus fans and select some for input on a social innovation that will allow participants to “become more active, give to others, be social, or engage in other activities associated with increased happiness,” the company said in a press release, adding that more details — the selection of participants, timelines, and concepts identified — will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg said:

Coca-Cola understands the value of communicating directly with its most ardent supporters in an authentic way that helps make the world more open and connected. This new program is the next step in fan culture, and we are glad to support Coca-Cola in this effort.

And The Coca-Cola Co. Chief Marketing and Commercial Leadership Officer Joe Tripodi added:

Throughout its history, Coca-Cola has always had a role in bringing simple moments of happiness to people around the world every day. Today we have an engaged global community more than 50 million strong connected through Facebook. This provides an opportunity to engage our most supportive and enthusiastic fans in a quest to find ways to make the world a happier place.
