Facebook Dating App Coffee Meets Bagel Puts Big Ten Conference Under A Microscope

Social dating application and website Coffee Meets Bagel would not be the first name to come up when thinking of analysis of the Big Ten Conference, but it did just that, examining the connections (or lack thereof) between alumni of universities in the conference.

Coffee Meets Bagel sends its users one potential match each day at noon, and they can choose to like or pass their “bagels.” The matches are friends of friends, similar to Facebook app YouShouldTotallyMeet, except that the mutual friends make the recommendations in YouShouldTotallyMeet.

The Big Ten is made up of:

  • Indiana University
  • University of Iowa
  • University of Maryland
  • University of Michigan
  • Michigan State University
  • University of Minnesota
  • University of Nebraska
  • Northwestern University
  • Ohio State University
  • Penn State University
  • Purdue University

Coffee Meets Bagel found that:

  • Iowa was the most popular school, as 34 percent of users from that school were liked by their matches.
  • Users from Michigan State were the most picky, rejecting 80 percent of their bagels.
  • The “hottest” schools were not necessarily the most popular.
  • Northwestern and Michigan ranked high in both academics and popularity.
  • Good matchups were Indiana and Maryland (36 percent like rate), and Rutgers and Indiana (35 percent), while the opposite was true for Michigan State and Rutgers (12 percent), and Michigan and Purdue (19 percent).
  • Big 10 alumni were 26 percent more likely to accept bagels if their matches were fellow alumni or classmates.
  • Overall, matches were 37 percent more likely to like each other if they shared mutual friends, and 90 percent more likely to do so if they shared four mutual friends.
