Mom Disciplines Daughter With Humiliating Facebook Timeline Cover Image

An Ohio mother was the source of the latest method for parents to use Facebook to discipline their kids, but at least this punishment didn’t involve gunfire.

WKYC-TV, NBC’s Gannett-owned Cleveland affiliate, reported that Denise Abbott of Akron responded to a display of disrespect by her 13-year-old daughter, Ava, by using Facebook to mete out her punishment.

The elder Abbott created a timeline cover image featuring a picture of her daughter with a red X covering her mouth, accompanied by the following text:

I do not know how to keep my (mouth shut). I am no longer allowed on Facebook or my phone. Please ask why. My mom says I have to answer everyone that asks.

The mom told the television station that while this type of punishment may not work for every parent, she believes her message was delivered, and her daughter will likely regain access to her cell phone and Facebook next week as long as she behaves.

And Ava Abbott told WKYC-TV via email:

I feel like I deserved it because I was mean to my mom and spoke disrespectful to her in front of my friends. Facebook is a big part of my social life, and it’s how me and my friends find out what is going on and making plans and about school work and projects. It made me realize that I didn’t want my picture on there like that because all of my friends were asking me what happened and what I did. I told the people that asked me and my mom why that I spoke to my mom mean when she was doing nice stuff for me and my friends. I know my mom always makes sure I don’t get away with stuff like that and I was sorry. Thank you, Ava.

The Abbotts’ Facebook punishment tale still pales in comparison to that of North Carolina father Tommy Jordan, who fired nine rounds from his .45 into his daughter’s laptop in February after the 15-year-old posted a profanity-laden rant on Facebook about having to do chores.
