Fans of musical artists are among the most passionate, and startup Creative Allies came up with a way to allow those fans to participate, via Facebook, in the design and selection of merchandise such as T-shirts and posters.
Fans can submit designs, which are voted on by other fans, and the designs with the most votes are incorporated into the artists’ merchandise, with several of the top designs chosen by the artists in some cases.
Submissions and votes can be shared via Facebook, with sharing controls set solely by users, and no automatic sharing. And a mobile site is in the works.
Creative Allies Account Director Jake Rosenbloum spoke with AllFacebook about his startup, which uses the social network to connect artists and their fans.
Artists (or, in some cases, their estates) currently using Creative Allies include Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Fleetwood Mac, Lady Antebellum, Counting Crows, Sublime, KT Tunstall, and Ellie Goulding.
Rosenbloum described some of the highlights since the launch of Creative Allies:
Fans can be tastemakers, even though they’re not designers. We give the fans a call to action: “What do you think of this?” It’s just an incredible way to create that engagement. And that’s just during the contest. We’re just trying to give people more options.
For the first time, we can get market research through Facebook.
It’s really amazing to work with these artists on the creative side. So many of these musicians are so into their artwork. Whatever they’re interested in, we’re going to do our best. Counting Crows took some of the designs that didn’t win for its tour poster and turned them into shirts. The participation and engagement we got from the Fleetwood Mac fan base was exceptional.
If it’s a band that’s starting out, a Creative Allies contest can do a great job in spreading the word.
