Something about public proclamations tends to make them more official. Wedding vows, for instance, seem to seal the deal to all who are present. And Facebook relationship status updates kind of have the same effect. I guess that’s why it’s such a big deal that Prince Harry’s now ex-girlfriend Chelsea seemingly made their most recent break up official by changing her status on Facebook to no longer being in a relationship.

Most of us have been there before, either one of the participants of an ended relationship or a friend that merely witnesses the proclamation on our Facebook newsfeed. Not to mention, public proclamations on Facebook seem to be the trendy thing for celebrities to do these days. But why is Facebook, of all things, such a powerful factor in Harry and Chelsea’s breakup?

Want to Hire a Political Assassin? Don't Start a Facebook Group

Facebook removed a group this week, citing that the group was promoting hateful attitudes, according to The New York Times. 20-year-old Bolivian Facebook user Hony Pierola created a Spanish-language group asking others to help raise money so a gunman could be hired to “liquidate” Bolivia’s leftist president Evo Morales. It was only until the group, called “Global collection to hire a sharpshooter to liquidate Evo Morales,” gained over 8,000 members and racked up nearly 500 hateful postings that the group gained the attention of the AP, which reported the group to Facebook.

Less than 90 minutes later the group, which bore a description reading “We need to get the money to inspire someone to do it,” was removed.

Facebook Group for Purple Tunnel of Doom Gets Authority's Attention

-Epic Fail Photo-While many of you sat at home and watched last week’s inauguration on the television, on live streaming video online or even on Facebook, there were still countless numbers of those that braved the cold to see Obama sworn in person. A recent Facebook Group created for those that were unable to access the inaugural event, called “Survivors of the Purple Tunnel of Doom,” has gained over 5,000 members. While the number of members this group has isn’t directly reflective of those that were actually at the event, it is indicative of the overall attitude some hold towards a number of situations that may have prevented some from entering the inaugural event.
