Since early on Facebook has provided performance advertisers with two options: cost per thousand impressions (CPM) or cost per click (CPC) advertising campaigns. While those two options will continue to be available, Facebook is making a significant change: reducing the number of clicks received by CPM advertisers. In other words they will decrease the priority of CPM campaigns over CPC campaigns.

You open the cap and cherry scent wafts into your nostrils. Just as you start to pour the beverage into your mouth you stop and wonder to yourself, “What on earth is Facebook water supposed to taste like?” Perhaps the sweat of 450 million people? No, that would be gross. How about a pleasing mix of black cherry and lime combined with water and sugar? While that’s not what first comes to my mind, the users of Facebook voted for this sugary concoction. My conclusion: don’t crowdsource recipes.

A school principal in New Jersey recently sent a letter to parents asking them to completely remove their children from any social networking sites and to keep close tabs on their text messaging habits. Anthony Orsini, the principal of Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Ridgewood, sent a long email to parents indicating that kids should be “not allowed to be a member of any social networking site.” Is the principal overstepping the line?
Over the past couple weeks Facebook has been rolling out an “upgraded” version of user profiles which connects their interests to Facebook Pages. While the concept is an interesting one, the current implementation has been frustrating a lot of users. For one, when you go through the process of shifting to the new design and associating your interests with Pages, many of the new “community Pages” are not properly synced. While it started as a joke, a group on Facebook is rapidly gaining popularity and becoming increasingly serious about getting William Shatner to be the next Governor General of Canada. OK, fine, it’s not actually becoming increasingly serious, but there’s no doubt that the group is experiencing massive growth, currently at 40,000+ members. The whole thing was started by a single reporter from the National Post and ballooned through word of mouth.

This evening Facebook posted an update to the official Facebook Page stating that over 50,000 websites have already added the Like button and/or other social plugins since they first launched last week. It’s a significant milestone for one week as it has taken years to reach hundreds of thousands of applications. Apparently many developers and website owners are dedicated to integrating Facebook features into their own sites.

Facebook appears to have crossed user privacy boundaries for the second time in under three years with their latest program, “Instant Personalization”. The service, which immediately customizes a site based on a user’s Facebook data the moment they visit the site, has drawn the attention of a number of Senators, not just users. While the debate between Facebook and public officials continues to rage on, one has to wonder: why is Facebook so intent on pushing the limits of our privacy?

A recent analysis of search terms found that the search term Facebook was the top U.S. search term for the four weeks ending March 27, 2010. Facebook related terms accounted for eight searches across the three top 10 lists for three different search engines. Yahoo related terms had six spots and MySpace had four.
You’d think Facebook would be more proactive in monitoring their groups, however a new group which is calling for Obama’s death has surpassed 1 million users. Another group which calls on Facebook to delete the group, is also rapidly approaching 1 million users. While Facebook supports freedom of speech, calling on the death of an individual (let alone the President) definitely crosses the line. The group also happens to be filled with racist and generally hateful comment.
