Popular Developer David Weekly Joins Facebook, Along With Ohana Co-Founder Nathan Schmidt

Facebook’s latest acqu-hire is one that may prove popular with application developers, as David Weekly and Nathan Schmidt, two of the three co-founders of startup Gaston Labs, parent of photo-newsletter creator Ohana, will start working at the social network Monday.

Silicon Alley Insider reported on Facebook’s hires of Weekly and Schmidt, saying that Ohana will be shut down “in the next few weeks,” and the third Ohana co-founder, Tamiko Rast, will not be joining the social network.

The Ohana team said in an email to SAI:

In the process of thinking about how best to facilitate sharing, we ended up in discussions with Facebook, and we’re excited to announce that we’re joining Facebook starting Monday the 25th. Consequently, we’ll be winding down the service in the next few weeks.

And Facebook confirmed the hires to SAI, saying:

The talent behind Gaston Labs has a long history of building great social products and a passion for working with developers. We’re excited for them to join Facebook and look forward to seeing what they will accomplish.

According to SAI, Weekly is very popular among the developer community, and is known for organizing coding festivals and creating developers’ community center Hacker Dojo in Mountain View, Calif.

SAI added that Weekly will work on Facebook’s platform team, which oversees the tools that developers use to integrate their apps and the social network, as well as handling developer relations.

Relationships between Facebook and some developers have been strained of late due to the social network’s blocking of access to its find friends functionality from apps such as MessageMe, Vine, Wonder, and Voxer.
