The Democratic Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives launched its own version of an All-Star Game Monday, only it’s not baseball, but a three-week new media competition that pits members against each other in a race to add fans on Facebook, as well as Twitter followers and YouTube subscribers.

Last year’s winner, dubbed the Most Valuable Player, was California Rep. Maxine Waters, a familiar face to cable news viewers. That competition resulted in more than 57,000 new fans, followers, and subscribers across all three platforms — up from 43,000 in the contest’s first year.

It will be interesting to see if this year’s winner has a similar national profile, and whether that helps to build a members’ online community.

The announcement of the third annual competition was made by Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, who said:

Facebook is the most widely used social media platform, and a significant amount of America’s political conversation is taking place on it. Not only can members share updates on what they are doing in Washington and back home in their districts, but they can also keep a pulse on what their constituents are saying about important issues and legislation and have an ongoing conversation.

Social media is critical to having an ongoing dialog with the public, and over the course of the contest, House Democrats will work to engage with even more constituents and get our message out to millions of Americans.

At the end of the competition, 50 All-Stars will be named, with the top prize recognized as the MVP. The competition isn’t just open to the Democratic Members of Congress.: Committees and caucuses, such as the Congressional Black Caucus, are welcome to participate.
