How Has Facebook’s Data Center In Prineville Impacted Oregon?

PrinevilleDataCenter650Facebook’s data center in Prineville, Ore., does more than simply house servers, according to an economic analysis of the facility’s impact on the region and the state commissioned by the social network and conducted by ECONorthwest.

ECONorthwest found that since Facebook broke ground in Prineville in 2010:

  • A total of 651 jobs were created in central Oregon, and 3,592 in Oregon overall.
  • Capital spending of $573 million was generated statewide.

In 2013 alone, non-construction operations resulted in:

  • $45 million in output and 207 jobs in central Oregon.
  • $64.7 million in output and 266 jobs throughout the state.

The social network’s 2013 operations in Oregon were also credited with generating nearly $500,000 in property taxes and more than $750,000 in personal state income taxes, and construction from 2009 through 2013 was responsible for more than $6.5 million in state income taxes.

Facebook said in a note on its Prineville Data Center page:

From the moment we broke ground on our Prineville data center in 2010, Facebook has been proud to contribute to the region’s economic progress and long-term success. It is with the support of the local community that we’ve been able to grow and develop into what we are today — a multibuilding campus that allows people to connect and share every day on Facebook.

We’re pleased to continue to have a positive impact on the economies of Prineville, Crook County, and central Oregon, from construction activity to full-time employment, direct job creation, and indirect “multiplier spending effects,” to our charitable giving initiatives. Since 2011, we’ve awarded $965,000 to Crook County schools and qualified nonprofits through our community action grants program and local donations, including the support of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education.

Our Prineville data center is part of the fabric that powers Facebook, and we are grateful to be a part of this community for the long term.
