Anonymous Says It's Not Attacking Facebook Saturday

A supposedly official Anonymous Twitter account said that the hacktivists won’t attack Facebook this Saturday.

The @AnonOps account disputed a videotaped threat uploaded to a supposedly less-official account on YouTube, tweeting, “Again we must say that we will not attack #Facebook! Again the mass media lie.”

The YouTube video threatened a January 28 attack, going so far as to include in its description a URL for downloading a program that would reportedly enable users to crash the social network’s servers.

However, Time‘s Techland blog reported the tweet from @AnonOps, which, we guess, is as official as the official Twitter account for a hacktivist group can be.

A different Twitter account, @GroupAnon, had debunked reports in August of an Anonymous attack on Facebook planned for November 5, Guy Fawkes Day, and the attack never occurred.

In any event, when Anonymous does carry out attacks, they are usually in the form of denial-of-service attacks on websites and their servers, so Facebook users have no need to fear theft of their personal data.

Readers: Will you take any extra precautions at midnight this Saturday when the alleged attack is scheduled to occur?
