How To Do More For A Friend’s Birthday Besides Post On Their Wall

Facebook has ruined birthdays. At least, that’s how tech blog Gizmodo feels. Gizmodo argued that Facebook has cheapened the meaning of birthdays, as everyone from close relatives to classmates you haven’t spoken with in years feels their birthday duties are fulfilled by just posting a message on your wall. How can you make a birthday special again?

The most basic way to celebrate someone’s birthday is to take 30 seconds out of your day to visit your friend’s page and post “Happy birthday!” or maybe even a funny picture or video. You can even Auto-Tune your message.

Gizmodo writer Sam Biddle talks about the bad side of how easy it is to wish a friend a happy birthday:

Your birthday used to be an event — now it’s a notification. Thanks to Zuck & Co., nobody has to make any effort to remember it. Facebook became too helpful and, in the process, completely cheapened the occurrence it was trying to make easy. When the clock hits midnight on the anniversary of your womb escape, people you haven’t seen or spoken to in years, maybe, trickle in to leave a perfunctory “Happy birthday!” Maybe you won’t even get an exclamation point. They’re only doing it because Facebook stuck the event in their face like any other after-work drink, house party, or going-away party.

But what if you want to do a little more?

The first way to go above and beyond a wall post, the blog points out, is to tell them happy birthday before the notification shows up in the top right corner of your news feed. Of course, this also means you’ll have to know your friend’s birthday beforehand. The other way is to actually write them a message, not with a keyboard, but with a pen and paper. The heartfelt sentiment will mean a bit more than a funny YouTube video post.
