Sadly, death is inevitable, but Facebook has given the industry that deals with death a little life, as the Expressing Sympathy Advisory Council reported that 64 percent of funeral directors who responded to its survey were contacted via their Facebook pages.
The ESAC found that 67 percent of funeral directors have used social networking services, and 44 percent of those said Facebook had the greatest impact on their businesses, followed by 13 percent apiece for YouTube and LinkedIn, and just 3 percent each for Twitter and Myspace.
ESAC member Anthony Kaniuk, associate publisher at Kates-Boylston Publications, which specializes in funeral and cemetery titles, said:
More and more funeral professionals are recognizing the importance of building an online presence for themselves. When you lose a loved one, you are at your most vulnerable, and many people are using the Internet to research their options. It absolutely makes sense for funeral directors to get online and let people know they are there for them.
