Facebook Pages Celebrate Elizabeth's 60 Years As Queen

While it will never come close to the hoopla surrounding royal wedding, the kick-off to Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee has her British subjects — and the world — expressing their congratulations on Facebook.

This week marks the Queen’s ascension to the throne 60 years ago, making her the second longest-serving British monarch, and the five month-long celebration is being marked on Facebook in small and large ways.

There are at least 20 Facebook pages devoted to the Diamond Jubilee, some with only a handful of fans to several thousand.

Here are just some of the highlights:

  • The British Monarchy has its own Facebook page with the official details of the five-month long event;
  • Posts are appearing on Facebook every 10 minutes or so today with the news that Sir Paul McCartney will play at the official Diamond Jubilee concert on June 4;
  • The town of Colchester has a Facebook page devoted to the celebration. Why? Because it’s one of 25,000 cities in the U.K . that’s vying to become a “Diamond Jubilee” city.
  • The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Souvenirs page has only the finest tchotchkes commemorating Queen Elizabeth’s 60 years on the throne.
  • A Facebook page focused solely on the main Diamond Jubilee celebrations on June 2 through 5 has more than 6,000 likes already.
