Facebook’s latest acquisition may be aimed at tweaking its messaging system and creating virtual worlds.
Email-prioritization system MailRank announced on its blog that Facebook acquired the company and will welcome MailRank Co-Founders Bethanye McKinney Blount and Bryan O’Sullivan to the social network’s engineering team.
As a result, the private beta of MailRank for Outlook has been discontinued.
Sister blog Inside Facebook pointed out that Blount and O’Sullivan are both former directors of engineering at Linden Lab, which created online virtual world Second Life.
Facebook Director of Engineering Cory Ondrejka is also an alumnus of Linden Lab, having served as its chief technology officer.
So far, no one seems to know exactly what Blount and O’Sullivan will work on at Facebook.
MailRank said in its farewell post:
We’re thrilled to announce that MailRank’s co-founders will be joining Facebook in December! We started MailRank to focus on the email that matters, combining powerful technology with a simple interface. It’s been rewarding to build a solution to problems people face every day. At Facebook, we’ll be working with a first-class team on our favorite types of technology problems, while supporting a great product people use every day.
