Facebook Enriches Page Filters With Keyword Blocking

Facebook has just made it a whole lot easier for page administrators to keep their walls rated PG, with the addition of a keyword filter.

Access this new filter by clicking on “edit page,” then “manage permissions,” and scroll down to the bottom of the next screen, where you’ll see two options for screening spam. One asks whether you want profanities blocked, either lightly, moderately or strongly. The other prompt lets you choose the keywords to look for.

Facebook’s profanity blocklist describes itself as filtering out “words and phrases marked as offensive by the broader community,” without elaborating on what the specific words are nor whether the community alluded to means people on the site or the world at large.

The moderation blocklist has a link that leads to a page in Facebook’s help center bearing the question, “How can I proactively moderate content posted on my page?” and the answer:

You can add comma-separated keywords to the moderation blacklist in order to prevent them from appearing on your page. You can add keywords to the blacklist from the manage permissions section, available after selecting edit page. When people include blacklisted keywords in a post and or a comment on your page, the content will be automatically marked as spam. Wall posts will be moved to the pages spam filter, which is hidden from public view. Comments will appear in grey to admins, but will not appear to the public.

Automating the moderation of wall posts seems like something that should have been available a long time ago. On the other hand, this feature might streamline things so greatly brand managers might be able to employ fewer page administrators once the filters are set up with the desired keywords.

Readers, have you tried out the new keyword filters on pages, and if so, what did you think of the capability?
