UPDATED: Major League Baseball Employee Reportedly Hacked Facebook Pages

If you are a Facebook fan of the New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Chicago White Sox, San Diego Padres, Miami Marlins, Washington Nationals, Atlanta Braves, or Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, you might have been a little alarmed Thursday, and not because of anything that happened on the field. A Major League Baseball employee reportedly hacked into those teams’ Facebook pages and posted funny and obscene messages, ranging from an announcement of a star player’s sex change to a dig at President Barack Obama.

Sports blog Deadspin reported Thursday that the Facebook pages of the Cubs and Yankees — two of the most popular baseball teams on the social network — were hacked. Not long after, readers sent in a flood of other screen grabs, showing messages that would never get past the public relations department. The statuses were all deleted quickly.

Facebook released a statement about the activity, which Deadspin claims was perpetrated by an MLB employee:

Recently, several pages made unauthorized posts as a result of actions from a single rogue administrator of these pages. Our team responded quickly and worked with our partners to eliminate the spam caused by this attack. This was an unique, isolated incident, and we are always working to improve our systems to better protect our users and their data.
