As we’ve been anticipating over the past few weeks, Facebook has officially launched a new product called “Insights For Your Domain”. The product, which received no formal announcement during the f8 keynote or press conference, enables developers to track activities including the number of users, the volume of content shared, and the response time of a developer’s website.
It appears to be similar data to that which was already provided by Facebook but instead there are upgraded charts and a new way to track actions within a website. Facebook’s description of their analytics services state:
You can get detailed analytics about the demographics of your users and how users are sharing from your application with Insights. The Graph API provides programmatic access to all of this data so you can integrate Platform data into your own, custom analytics systems.
So is this a direct competitor to Google Analytics? At this point it doesn’t appear to be, however Facebook will rapidly have access to a large amount of analytical data to potentially launch large improvements to their Insights product in the future. This afternoon Facebook will be going into more detail about Insights to a developer audience at which point we’ll look for further clarification of the upgraded product.
To install the new Insights, you can visit the Facebook insights page and click on the “Insights For Your Domain” button.
