Facebook Livestream Will Pep Talk Engineering Students

An organization called Stay With It has teamed up with Facebook to livestream an event on Wednesday encouraging engineering students to stick with the program.

At 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Wednesday, March 14, Facebook will livestream a discussion with top engineering executives about how they overcame challenges in studying engineering. The speakers are:

  • Paul Otellini, president and chief executive officer of Intel Corporation;
  • Charles Bolden, former astronaut and NASA Administrator;
  • Dr. Gary May, dean of engineering at Georgia Tech;
  • Maggie Johnson, director of Education and University Relations for Google.
  • Guy Primus, chief operating officer of Overbrook Entertainment;
  • Sherita Ceasar, vice president of NETO P&I national video deployment Engineering at Comcast;
  • Serkan Piantino, engineering manager at Facebook;

The event will also feature a special taped message from President Barack Obama.

The Facebook live event will be moderated by talk show host and engineer Montel Williams, and held at the Ferst Center at Georgia Tech, as part of the campus-wide Day of Engineering.

Post questions on in advance, or tune in next week to participate in the live discussion on the Facebook engineering page.

Universities across the U.S. are organizing viewing parties.

The Stay With It campaign was created in 2011 by The President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness and focuses on keeping engineering students in school. The campaign is part of a larger effort by the administration to keep the U.S. competitive in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, education.

According to the organizers, only 14 percent of all U.S. undergraduate students are enrolled in science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs and there is a 40 percent attrition rate of those enrolled in these disciplines after the first year.
