Mobile Facebook Messenger Update Adds Emoticons, Shows When Friends Were Last Active

Shortly after Facebook announced an upgrade for Apple iOS devices and said it was working on improving the Android application, the team behind the site’s mobile Messenger app released an update that allows users to see when their friends were last active. Facebook is in the process of rolling the update out for Android and Apple users, who can now use emoticons and gain one-tap access to their friends’ timelines.

Messenger 1.9 includes smiley faces, hearts, and other emoticons. By clicking on a message recipient’s name at the top of the conversation, users can view the friend’s timeline. By seeing when the friend was last active, users can get a better idea of how soon to expect a reply. Facebook noted that they have improved the app’s new message sound and fixed other bugs.
