Facebook Is The Most Popular Mobile App In The U.S.

We know that more and more users around the world are accessing Facebook through their phones, but new statistics released Wednesday by comScore show that Facebook’s native application has surpassed Google Maps and is now the most widely used mobile utility in the U.S.

As reported by Mashable, Facebook passed Google Maps in October 2012 — largely because Google Maps was booted as a default app on iOS 6 — and stayed on top through the rest of the year.

According to comScore, Facebook’s mobile apps on iOS, Android, and BlackBerry had 85.5 million monthly unique users in the U.S. in December. This is an increase from roughly 65 million in March, when the company started keeping this kind of data. Google Maps, which was the most popular app for the first nine months of 2012, went from 80 million users in August and September to about 70 million in October.

Mashable also reported that Facebook largely dominates time spent on mobile devices. ComScore data show that 23 percent of time on phones and tablets is spent using Facebook, while only 10 percent is spent on Google Maps.

Andrew Lipsman, comScore’s vice president of industry analysis, talked with Mashable about how iOS 6 affected Facebook’s rise and Google Maps’ fall:

Both Google Maps and Facebook were growing nicely throughout the year until that happened. Facebook continued that trend, and Google Maps took a dip that one month, and now it’s climbing back.

Here are the top apps, as of December:
