The two girls allegedly obtained the Facebook password of classmate Leslie Cote and hacked her account — who asked that her name be revealed in order to call attention to the issue.
The duo then posted sexually explicit content on Cote’s profile, including a message indicating that 12-year-old Cote was willing to perform sex acts on people, the Seattle Press Intelligencer reported.
The two defendants even went so far as to instant-message boys to arrange dates fort Cote.
King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg said:
This case reveals the dark side of social media sites used by young people. Many kids think that on a social media site, their actions will be anonymous, and they are free to use it as weapon to bully, harass, and intimidate another person. This case demonstrates that assuming the identity of another person on the Internet with the intent to torment them and expose them to the harassment of others is a crime.
