Forget Your ID? Your Facebook Profile Could Be Enough To Get You On Your Flight

AirportSecurityRobots650If you arrive at the airport and realize that you neglected to bring your driver’s license or another form of government-issued ID, your Facebook profile may be enough to get your on your flight, as Vimeo Co-Founder and DIY CEO Zach Klein discovered Sunday.

Klein said via tweet, as reported by Mashable, that the Transportation Security Administration accepted his Facebook profile as proof of his identity, later tweeting a link to the TSA page that lists acceptable IDs, which states:

We understand passengers occasionally arrive at the airport without an ID, due to lost items or inadvertently leaving them at home. Not having an ID does not necessarily mean a passenger won’t be allowed to fly. If passengers are willing to provide additional information, we have other means of substantiating someone’s identity, like using publicly available databases.

TSA Spokesman Ross Feinstein told Mashable the policy is not a new one, adding a somewhat confusing clarification:

We don’t utilize social media websites to confirm a passenger’s identity. We use publicly available databases.

Facebook apparently qualified as a publicly available database in Klein’s case, as he tweeted (two separate tweets):

Got to the airport, realized I left my ID at home. TSA allowed me to use my Facebook profile instead.

Apparently this isn’t remarkable; the TSA has a policy of using any “publicly available database” to verify identity.
