A&E's Biography Channel Taps Facebook's Social Graph

The website for A&E Television Networks’ Biography Channel has launched tailored versions of Facebook plugins called My Connections and Your Friends’ Connections.

After signing in with Facebook Connect, My Connections compares users’ information such as hometown, date of birth, and alma mater, with more than 6,000 famous people in Bio’s database, displaying common intersections.

Your Friends’ Connections does the same for Facebook members on users’ friends lists.

A widget for the Connections feature also appears on most pages that are part of Bio.com

The profiles for the 6,000-plus famous people include elements such as text biographies, quick facts, “Best Known For,” video, photos, and quotes.

In addition to airing biographies, the Biography Channel shows series such a “I Survived…,” “Celebrity Ghost Stories,” “Inside Story,” and “Aftermath with William Shatner.”

A&E Television Networks Executive Vice President of Digital Media and Business Development Dan Suratt said:

The success of Bio through the years has demonstrated our fascination with famous people — not just from understanding what makes them different from us, but what we share in common with them. Now, we’ve re-engineered Bio.com to leverage Facebook’s social graph to highlight the personal connections that our visitors and their friends also share with those personalities of today and years past.
