Timeline Makes TripAdvisor Facebook App Grow Tenfold

TripAdvisor‘s Cities I’ve Visited application is enjoying ten times as many visitors since upgrading for timeline.

TripAdvisor originally launched Cities I’ve Visited in 2007, and Facebook’s developer blog highlighted changes to the app that were implemented during the upgrade, and the results they have brought.

Cities I’ve Visited has incorporated the open graph action verbs: pin (to point out a location on a map, updated, want to go, favorite, and rate. TripAdvisor also helped spur usage of the app by running targeted ads and a sponsored stories campaign on Facebook.

The developer blog post added:

Cities I’ve Visited maps the frequent interactions people take — pinning a city and rating a place — to open graph actions to maximize the number of stories people publish. For new and existing users, Cities I’ve Visited encourages pinning cities and rating places to maximize sharing and generate stories.

Cities I’ve Visited uses custom properties — such as location — to create interesting timeline aggregations like “total distance traveled” and “percent of world visited.”
