Facebook ranks second only to Google for video watching in the U.S.
Google here really means YouTube, the leading video site owned by the search giant, and the rankings reflect viewership in October as measured by comScore Video Metrix.
Over 58.8 million Americans watched video on Facebook during October, compared to an overall U.S. audience of 184 million together watching a record 42.6 billion videos.
Google visitors accounted for half of those videos, or 20.9 billion, yet the total number of unique viewers amounted to 161 million.
So, roughly half of all online video watching in the U.S. takes place among roughly one third of Facebook‘s American users.
Facebook has steadily climbed up the monthly ranking of online video watching over the past year, ranking sixth as recently as February.
Continuing upgrades of the video sharing options on Facebook contribute to the rise, along with the large size of the site’s membership, which now hovers around the 800 million mark.
