Facebookers React To 2011 U.S. Election Results (Updated)

As U.S. election results are called tonight, Facebook users are taking to the site to comment on the outcomes in their states.

However, the rate has slowed to about a post every minute, a trickle as compared to the once every five seconds we saw around 7 p.m. tonight when the polls started closing on the east coast.

The Associated Press has confirmed the voting results of key ballot initiatives and elections for statewide offices, as of 10:45 p.m. Eastern Standard Time:

  • Ohio voters have overwhelming rejected Ohio law SB-5, the anti-collective bargaining measure that Republican Governor John Kasich introduced earlier this year. Essentially, voters have said “no” to what was called Issue 2.
  • Maine voters approve a ballot initiative allowing same-day voter registration.
  • Kentucky Democratic Governor Steven Breshear won re-election in a landslide. With 51 percent of precincts reporting, Breshear won handily with 58 percent of the vote.
  • The “personhood” amendment in Mississippi, the severely restrictive anti-abortion measure also known as Issue 26, appears to be going down in defeat. With 50 percent of precincts reporting, the ballot initiative is down 40 percent to 60 percent.
  • Republican Lieutenant Governor Phil Bryant will succeed Haley Barbour as the next governor of Mississippi. Bryant won 59 percent of the vote, with 45 percent of precincts reporting, according to the Associated Press.

And an interesting note about Ohio Republican Governor John Kasich: While he supports the anti-union bill known as Issue 2 that pundits expect will be defeated today, he remains one of the most popular governors on Facebook, according to the Election Tracker. He’s enjoyed the second most Facebook fan growth today among U.S. governors.
