REPORT: Facebook Developing FB@Work For Offices

LaptopTabletWork650Odds are that most people are using Facebook while at work, whether they are permitted to do so or not, and now, a source tells Ingrid Lunden of TechCrunch, the social network is looking to capitalize on those users with FB@Work, a work version of Facebook being developed at the company’s offices in London.

Facebook would not comment on FB@Work, but the source told Lunden:

We are making work more fun and efficient by building an at-work version of Facebook. We will touch code throughout the stack and on all platforms.

Lunden said it was unclear whether FB@Work will be an internal enterprise communications platform, or something more along the lines of LinkedIn, adding that it was also unclear whether the company had any hopes of monetizing FB@Work, or whether it would simply be offered as a set of free tools.

A former Facebook employee told Lunden:

Everyone at Facebook uses Facebook for work. Most of their communication and planning is done though messages and groups. It would be a pretty natural thing to try to expose this way of using Facebook to get things done at the office to the rest of the world. It’s a really fast and efficient way to get things done.

Communication along these lines is not exclusive to Facebook itself, as Hearsay Social CEO Clara Shih also told Lunden:

Facebook groups and group messaging have already been transformative for how we communicate and collaborate at Hearsay Social. As a social media software company, we know 100 percent of our employees are on Facebook. Rather than reinvent the wheel or ask employees to login to yet another system, we decided to create a private, unlisted Facebook group to house many of our real-time company chats and conversations.
