If you’ve only just recovered from the Bitstrips epidemic, you might want to sit down, and not at your computer: The next big (albeit slightly less annoying) Facebook craze is coming. It’s called Flipagram, and it’s the latest chart-topper in the App Store.
No, this isn’t Instagram for dolphins or snorkelers. Flipagram enables you to make short “video stories” — image slideshows with soundtracks of your choice. Videos are between 15 and 30 seconds long, and you can pull photos from Facebook, Instagram, and your phone.
Completed videos can then be uploaded to social media.
And it’s easy to see why this is popular: People are vain, and they love taking photos of themselves and sharing them with the world.
Flipagram cashes in on the narcissism that’s so prevalent on Facebook, allowing users to make stories from their photos and add a song that illustrates who they think they are.
It’s one of those apps that produces content that only the creator cares about, and the rest of us have to suffer.
Expect selfies with soundtracks. Expect blow-by-blow accounts of shopping sprees, accompanied by “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” by Cyndi Lauper. Expect dancing and daiquiris with 50 Cent’s “In Da Club” in the background.
That’s not to say that Flipagram has to be used for inane purposes. It has potential for marketers, too — not as much potential as YouTube and Vine, though. It’s probably going to be biggest with the teenage crowd.
If you don’t like the app, you can always hide it from your News Feed, or delete the offenders, if your friends list needs pruning.
And if nothing else, there’s always the hope that Flipagram will push Bitstrips off the face of the earth.
Flipagram is available for iOS and Android. Have an opinion? Share it in the comments below!
