Sanofi Pasteur Facebook Message To Those Without Flu Shots: Don’t Be A FLUgitive

TheFLUgitivesTeaserMessage to: Scaredy Cat, Turbo Mom, Latest and Greatest Guy, and Fitness Fanatic — you make us sick! That’s because you spread the flu, but The FLUgitives are plotting against you on Facebook.

See, we all know that the flu is spread easily, and the No. 1 thing that adults can do to prevent it is to get flu vaccines. But so many people, including those called out above — Scaredy Cats (just can’t face the vaccine), Turbo Moms (take care of everyone except themselves and their own health), the Latest and Greatest Guy (knows the latest about everything, except important vaccines), Fitness Fanatic (they work out even if it damages their health) — won’t get the vaccines.

So now, Sanofi Pasteur — the largest company in the world devoted strictly to vaccines — is calling in the big guns: Facebook users.

The company established a Facebook page for The FLUgitives, where users will find information (really, it’s fun) about the flu, vaccines, and prevention. Some of the most common questions about flu and vaccines are answered, as well.

Carlos E. Picone, vice chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C., said in a release announcing The FLUgitives:

Because flu season can begin as early as October and last through May, the best prevention for those planning to get their annual flu shot is to get it as early as possible in the season, allowing your body time to build up its immunity. There’s no need to be a FLUgitive this year; speak with your healthcare provider about vaccination and your vaccination options.

If this sound like a lot of fuss, consider that every year one in five people, or up to 20 percent of the population, get the flu. Of that number, an estimated 226,000 people are hospitalized from influenza-related complications.

And remember that nasty bout of flu in 2012 and early 2013? Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that the influenza activity started about a month before it was expected to begin. No one knows if the new season will bring another batch of early misery.

Readers: Have you had your flu vaccines yet, or are you a FLUgitive?
