Facebook Adds Free Calling Via Wi-Fi, Data Connections To Messenger For IPhone

Facebook has begun the rollout of a free calling button in its Messenger application for the iPhone to U.S. users, following a short test of voice messaging in Canada that began earlier this month.

The Verge reported that Facebook confirmed the rollout, saying that iPhone users do not have to update their apps, and describing the process as follows:

  • Begin a Messenger conversation with the user who will be the recipient of the call.
  • Tap the “i” button in the top-right-hand corner.
  • Click “Free Call.”
  • Recipients will receive push notifications alerting them to the call.

According to The Verge, the new feature will allow Facebook users to call other Facebook users free of charge via Wi-Fi or iPhone data connections.
