Freedom From Facebook Day: Conservatives Urge 24-Hour Boycott Of Social Network

A group of conservative activists and bloggers is promoting a 24-hour boycott of Facebook July 4 as a response to their claim that Facebook is censoring conservative content and blocking users. So how is Freedom from Facebook Day being promoted? As a Facebook event, naturally.

The event was created by Joe Newby, an Idaho blogger and columnist for Examiner.com, who highlighted several examples of what he called anti-conservative censorship by the social network, telling The Daily Beast:

All it takes is pretty much the click of a mouse, and a person’s reputation or livelihood is destroyed. Suspects in criminal trials have more rights than users on Facebook.

Diane Sori, the Florida-based author of conservative blog The Patriot Factor, has had several scraps with the social network, telling The Daily Beast she was banned from Facebook for writing that Sharia, the moral code and religious law of Islam, was not compatible with American society, and for posting a 1994 photograph of dead soldiers being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu, Somalia, and adding:

I personally have been thrown off Facebook six times. I am a conservative blogger now gaining national recognition. They didn’t like what I wrote, so they kicked me off.

Another conservative blogger, Julia Sieben, author of Lady Patriots, pointed to Facebook Co-Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s spearheading of political-advocacy group FWD.us, telling The Daily Beast:

They started a lobbying business. They are lobbyists now, which are the filthiest, richest people in Washington, D.C. They are all about putting forward Obama’s liberal agenda.

When the people who are in charge of your media have a political agenda, you are taking us back to the days of Napoleon and his propaganda, or when Hitler purchased the papers in Germany to put out his propaganda. It is a Marxist mentality pushing towards totalitarianism.

Zuckerberg has taken great pains to establish FWD.us and Facebook as completely separate entities, and he has not declared a political affiliation, having hosted fundraisers for politicians from both major parties — Newark Mayor Cory Booker, a Democrat, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican.

The organizers of Freedom from Facebook Day are not expecting much, with Lady Patriots blogger Sharon Schuetz telling The Daily Beast:

It is not going to put a big dent in Facebook’s 1.1. billion subscribers, but people need to feel like they are accomplishing something.
