Facebook To Receive GLAAD Special Recognition Award

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) will present a Special Recognition Award to Facebook at its 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards, to be held June 2 at the Marriott Marquis in San Francisco.

GLAAD is recognizing the social network for its efforts toward the prevention of bullying, as well as the options it offers to its LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) users.

High school student Brittany McMillan will present the award to Facebook Spokesman Andrew Noyes and Head of Diversity Sara Sperling.

McMillan created Spirit Day in 2010 and worked with GLAAD on the annual event, in which millions of participants wear purple or change their Facebook photos to purple in support of LGBT youth and to fight bullying.

And GLAAD said Noyes and Sperling were instrumental in Facebook’s creation of the Network of Support, in which the social network teams up with GLAAD; MTV; the Human Rights Campaign; the Trevor Project; the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network; and Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays.

GLAAD also saluted Facebook for:

  • Launching the Stop Bullying: Speak Up campaign with Time-Warner last September.
  • Giving its users the option to select “in a civil union” and “in a domestic partnership” when choosing their relationship status.
  • Adding content to its help center on how users can help LGBT users who have posted suicidal material and introducing special reporting procedures for LGBT youth in cooperation with the Trevor Project and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
