Rumors began surfacing in March that Facebook would add a Twitter staple, hashtags, and now developer Tom Waddington uncovered evidence that the social network is getting closer to incorporating the feature in the form of a mention of “hashtag” in the software-development kit for JavaScript.

Waddington shared his discovery with sister blog Inside Facebook, saying that the coding was likely intended for an XFBML hashtag plugin, similar to the hashtag-tracking widget Twitter provides for developers and publishers on its platform.

Waddington also told Inside Facebook the hashtag coding redirects to Facebook.com, rather than generating a 404 error page, leading him to believe the social network set aside the page for a future feature.

Facebook-owned photo-sharing network Instagram already uses hashtags.
