How To Veto Political Posts From Your Facebook News Feed

So you’re not running with Romney or beaming for Barack, and you’re a little sick of seeing all of the political posts on your Facebook news feed. There is a way to block them without clicking on each one individually. Tech blog Lifehacker illustrates how to remove certain keywords (such as Romney, Obama, Democratic, Republican, etc.) from popping up in the news feed.

Here are the steps:

  1. Install Social Fixer: Lifehacker suggests that users install Social Fixer, which allows people to block certain keywords. Hate football? You might want to save this link for that time around the Super Bowl, too. It’s a browser extension for Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Opera. Once you’ve got that installed, go to Facebook and choose the minimal installation option when prompted, so it doesn’t filter everything at first.
  2. Block status updates: Go to Social Fixer’s options in the blue bar at the top of your screen, then click filters in the right sidebar. Under matching text, type what you want blocked, looking like this: /Romney|Obama|republicans|democrats/i. Putting the “i” at the end ensures that the filtered terms aren’t case-sensitive. After that, click hide and save.
  3. Block links: Go back to options and click add new filter, putting text similar to this in the Matching Selector box: a[href*="obama|romney|republicans|democrats"]. Doing this means you won’t see any links that have these words in the URL (so it won’t hide everything, but it will help). Unfortunately, Lifehacker notes that there’s not a fix for political pictures, so Barack Obama memes are still fair game for your news feed. Add whatever words you want, separated by a vertical pipe, then click hide. Click save to return to Facebook.

You can also use this to block out any other subjects, such as movie or TV show spoilers, or whatever else you might find annoying.
