Facebook Attracts Users In India With Mobile Voice Credits

Facebook representatives have been traveling throughout Asia, trying to boost the social network’s numbers all over the continent. According to TechCrunch, Facebook is getting people in India to sign up for the site by offering them a bonus: calling credits.

Through Facebook’s Talktime program, which the social network told TechCrunch it is testing, people in India who sign up for Facebook through their mobile devices receive 50 rupee (roughly $1) calling credits. If users refer friends who sign up, they receive additional 50 rupee credits. This serves as a way for Facebook to not only boost its membership in India (which Socialbakers says ranks third worldwide), but to add to its growing cache of mobile users.

TechCrunch cited statistics that roughly 30 percent of Facebook signups in India come from mobile. However, Facebook’s reputation in the country is not a positive one.

A Facebook spokesperson confirmed the test to TechCrunch:

We partner with a number of telecoms companies around the world, many of whom offer incentives for their customers to use Facebook, such as zero rating mobile Internet access to the service. This test is another such initiative.
