Adobe Social studied more than 69 million social mentions from Facebook, Google Plus, Reddit, Twitter, Dailymotion, Flickr, Instagram, Tumblr, vKontakte, Disqus, Foursquare, Metacafe, WordPress, YouTube, and blogs, and its findings included:

  • There have been more than 19 million social mentions of 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil since June 2013.
  • There were more social mentions in the month leading up to the World Cup than in the months prior to the Super Bowl and the Olympics.
  • 90 percent of the world has contributed to conversation about the tournament, topping the Olympics (84 percent) and the Super Bowl (78 percent).
  • The top five countries in terms of World Cup mentions are: Japan (37 percent), U.K. (11 percent), Brazil (9 percent), and Germany and the U.S. (8 percent apiece).
  • The Asia-Pacific region is generating the most World Cup social buzz, at 48 percent, followed by EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) at 32 percent, and the Americas at 20 percent.
  • The U.K. is producing 56 percent of social buzz from English-speaking countries.
  • 59 percent of World Cup social buzz is related to admiration, joy, or anticipation for the event.
  • 42 percent of Brazilians, however, are expressing sadness, anger, or disgust.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo was the most-mentioned player on a World Cup roster, with more than 1.5 million mentions, followed by Neymar, with more than 1.2 million.
