INFOGRAPHIC: How Social Were The 2014 Winter Olympic Games From Sochi, Russia?

IOCInfographicSochi2014Teaser650The 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, are now a memory, but the International Olympic Committee took one final look at highlights and statistics on Facebook and other social networks at the Games.

Some of the IOC’s findings were:

  • There were more than 2 billion impressions across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and vKontakte.
  • There were more than 90,000 updates by individual athletes and teams.
  • Team USA was the most active, with 22,598 posts across Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram during the Games, followed by Canada with 15,716, and the U.K. with 9,867.
  • Facebook was the top social network in terms of mentions during the Games, at 120 million, followed by vKontakte at 54 million, and Twitter at 40 million.
  • The Olympic Games Facebook page added more than 2 million new likes.
  • The most commonly used hashtag was #sochi2014.
  • The busiest days were Feb. 7, when the opening ceremony was held, and Feb. 8, when the figure-skating team competition and women’s freestyle skiing moguls were contested.

IOC Director of Communications Mark Adams said in a release announcing the results:

Russia has had its first social media Olympics, and for the IOC, it is important to engage and connect with the home team. The Games have come to an end, but the social legacy lives on, as we want to keep connecting with our millions of new fans, telling them about the Youth Olympic Games and, of course, Rio 2016 — the host city of the next Summer Olympics.
