Instagram Debuts Time-Lapse Video App Hyperlapse

HyperlapseiPhone650Facebook-owned photo- and video-sharing network Instagram announced the launch of Hyperlapse, a stand-alone application (currently available only for iOS) that allows users to create high-quality time lapse videos.

Instagram described time-lapse videos in an email to AllFacebook:

Time-lapse is a technique where video is captured at a lower frame rate than normal, and then played back at a standard frame rate. Thus motion that takes a long time, like a flower blooming, appears to happen in real-time. For example, you can record the sun slowly rising and use Hyperlapse to show all of your footage in seconds. Hyperlapse is great for capturing vast but slow movements, such as clouds, the movement of a crowd or a landscape moving outside of a car.

The key to Hyperlapse, according to Instagram, is its image-stabilization technology, and the app allows users to choose playback speeds from one time (normal) to up to 12 times, as well as to easily share videos to Facebook, Instagram or the Camera Rolls on users’ iOS devices.

Instagram said in a blog post announcing the launch of Hyperlapse:

Traditionally, time-lapse videos depend on holding your phone or camera still while you film. Hyperlapse from Instagram features built-in stabilization technology that lets you create moving, handheld time lapses that result in a cinematic look, quality and feel — a feat that has previously only been possible with expensive equipment.

We designed Hyperlapse to be as simple as possible. You don’t need an account to create a hyperlapse. Instead, you open up straight to the camera. Tap once to begin recording and tap again to stop. Choose a playback speed that you like between one time and 12 times and tap the green check mark to save it to your camera roll. You can share your video on Instagram easily from there.

From documenting your whole commute in seconds or the preparation of your dinner from start to finish to capturing an entire sunset as it unfolds, we’re thrilled about the creative possibilities Hyperlapse unlocks. We can’t wait to see what you’ll create.

The potential uses for Hyperlapse by businesses on Instagram were also addressed in a post on the Instagram for Business blog:

Since Hyperplapse is all about capturing objects, people and places in motion, we’re really excited to see how businesses will use the app. Whether shooting products on an assembly line, actors behind the scenes or a buzzing restaurant scene, we think businesses can use Hyperlapse to convey a side of their brands on Instagram that people won’t be able to see anywhere else.

Some tips to get you started:

  • Even though Hyperlapse is new, it shouldn’t require you to change your content strategy. Think of the app as another tool to help your team create compelling videos on Instagram and to visually express what’s most unique about your brand.
  • Consider capturing a man-made or natural process that’s core to your brand, normally hidden from public view and becomes even more compelling when conveyed through video footage that’s sped up by several times.
  • For inspiration, check out what others in the community are doing. Over the next several days, we’ll feature some amazing examples on the Instagram and Instagram for Business blogs.

We’re thrilled about the creative possibilities Hyperlapse unlocks for your brand. And we can’t wait to see what you’ll create.
