If a picture is worth 1,000 words, it’s certainly worth more than 140 characters, so it should come as no surprise that Facebook-owned photo-sharing application Instagram topped Twitter in terms of average daily active users and time spent on the site for the month of August, according to data provided by comScore to AllThingsD.

According to comScore, Instagram tallied 7.3 million average DAUs in August, compared with 6.868 million for Twitter, while visitors to the sites spent an average of 257 minutes on Instagram, versus 169.9 minutes on Twitter, AllThingsD reported.

Instagram was able to leapfrog Twitter despite the latter’s edge in smartphone-based visitors for the month, 29 million versus just under 22 million.
