Rep. Jared Polis Named MVP In Democrats’ Facebook Contest

Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) was named the winner of the 2012 Member Online All-Star Competition, scoring the most new friends on Facebook, and connections on Twitter and YouTube, during the three-week annual contest.

In total, participating Democrats in the House acquired more than 139,000 new Facebook fans, Twitter followers, and YouTube subscribers, which surpasses last year’s total by 82,000, according to a press release from Whip Steny Hoyer’s office.

Among the runners-up are:

  • Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa), 12,904 new followers
  • Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), 12,879 new followers
  • Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.), 9,862 new followers

The Oversight & Government Reform Committee and the Congressional Black Caucus were named MVPs in their respective categories.

Last year’s winner was Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), who joined Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) as among the competition’s top scorers. We surmised at the time that a high media profile could have helped to catapult these members to the top.

Polis arguably has a lower national media profile, but he hails from a very competitive state in terms of 2012 electoral politics. It appears that Polis and the other All Stars scoring high in the contest did it the “old-fashioned” way; through effective engagement, interactions, sharing, and multimedia strategies.
