Facebook is still the social network of choice among the U.S. work force, with 83 percent of respondents to a survey by social recruiting platform Jobvite having Facebook profiles, but Twitter and LinkedIn showed strong gains in 2012 versus 2011. Those Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn accounts are likely active, as well, as Jobvite also found that three-quarters of respondents were actively looking for or open to new jobs.
The Polling Company Inc. surveyed 2,108 adults from Sept. 5 through 7, with 1,266 being part of the work force, and it also found that:
- Facebook’s 83 percent adoption was up slightly from 82 percent in 2011, but Twitter and LinkedIn each gained 9 percent, to 46 percent and 32 percent, respectively.
- 25 percent of respondents updated their Facebook profiles to reflect professional information in 2012, just behind LinkedIn at 26 percent, and ahead of Twitter at 13 percent.
- 86 percent of recruiters are likely to view candidates’ social media profiles, and 48 percent said they always do so.
- 52 percent of job seekers used Facebook to help find work, up from 48 percent in 2011.
- One out of five had contacts share jobs on Facebook, unchanged from last year.
- 14 percent searched for jobs on Facebook.
- 15 percent modified privacy settings with work in mind.
- 17 percent provided their profile on job applications or during interviews.
- 70 percent of Facebook-using job seekers are male, 63 percent are under the age of 40, 40 percent earn more than $75,000, and 36 percent are college graduates.
