Facebook VP Of Corporate Communications Joe Lockhart Previews Democratic Convention

As the Democratic National Convention kicks off Tuesday in Charlotte, N.C., Facebook posted an interview with Joe Lockhart, vice president of corporate communications at the social network, in which he shares his thoughts on how this unique political tradition has evolved over time with technology advancements, and what attendees can expect to see from the company this week.

Lockhart knows a thing or two about  the political nominating process. Besides serving on former President Bill Clinton‘s re-election campaign and as a White House spokesman, his father managed convention coverage for NBC News. Every four years, his summer vacations included trips to the convention cities.

Given his front-row seat in national politics, Lockhart’s views on whether these are the most “social” elections in history were:

Social media will ultimately produce a much more engaged and informed electorate because it brings the campaigns to the people. I  believe social, friends connecting with friends, and candidates connecting directly with voters will produce a very different kind of campaigning and potentially a much more palatable political environment for most people.

Look for Facebook to play a similar role to what it did at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. — helping delegates, media, politicos, and the community find ways to use Facebook to share their experience and connect.

Speaking of connecting, the social network is hosting another “Apps and Drinks” event in Charlotte — this time with a Democratic twist — as well as a joint event designed to celebrate the country’s unique startup culture.

The interview from Facebook’s Politics & Government team may be found on the U.S. Politics on Facebook page.
