Facebook Integration Finally Included In Netflix Envelope

Netflix users can finally link their accounts to their Facebook profiles following a long battle in Washington, D.C., which resulted in last December’s overhaul of the 1988 Video Privacy Protection Act, which had previously prevented video-rental companies from sharing users’ viewing data.

As a result of the integration with Facebook, announced by Netflix Wednesday, Netflix streaming users in the U.S. can now link their accounts to Facebook, with the option to share content they have viewed within Netflix and Facebook, and the ability to view content their friends have watched via “Friends’ Favorites” and “Watched By Your Friends” rows added to their Netflix accounts.

Netflix added that users can adjust their privacy settings via the “Social Settings” menu on Netflix.com, and their connections with Facebook can be disabled at any time.

The social features should be available to all U.S. Netflix users by the end of the week.

Facebook Director of Platform Partnerships and Operations Justin Osofsky said:

Over the years, Netflix has deepened its Facebook integration to enable people to discover movies through friends and to share what they’re watching. With their integration, Netflix has a new opportunity to reach the more than 1 billion people on Facebook. We look forward to Netflix continuing to integrate with Facebook and offering their community rich ways to discover movies and TV shows with their friends.

Netflix Vice President of Product Innovation Tom Willerer added:

There are few better ways to find a movie or TV series you’ll love than hearing about it from your friends. Facebook already makes it easy for our international members to connect with friends over TV shows and movies, and we’re thrilled to now bring this experience to our U.S. members.

People naturally talk about TV shows and movies and love to share their experiences. Through the Netflix/Facebook integration, we want to let Netflix members express themselves on Facebook and provide a digital version of the proverbial water cooler.
